The Department of Physics is actively involved in the research in the emerging areas of science and technology. Since its inception the department of physics has provided both basic and engineering-oriented physics theory and practical courses for the B. Tech 1st year students. Presently, M.Sc. and Ph.D. programme are also going on in the department. Broad areas of expertise available in the department are Solid State Gas Sensors, Carrier Transport in Thin Films, Ferroelectrics and related materials, Multiferroics, Solar Energy Materials, Liquid Crystals, Semiconductor Nanostructure and Devices, Polymer Nanocomposites, Solar Photocatalysis, Solar Energy Materials, Energy storage devices and materials, Nanoionics based resistive switching devices, Theoretical Physics, Theoretical Nuclear and Particle Physics etc..

Biographical Sketch : | Dr. Ranjith G. Nair is an Assistant Professor in Physics at National Institute of Technology Silchar. He teaches in M.Sc Applied Physics program and Engineering Physics for B.Tech Students. His thrust areas of research are Solar Photocatalysis, Solar Photovoltaics, Ion Beam Irradiation and Energy materials. Two research scholars and two M.Sc students are working under him and he has 01 sponsored project in association with Inter University Acceleration Centre, New Delhi and 01 solar roof top installation project sponsored by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. A Solar E-Rickshaw with hybrid power generation has been developed by him along with few B.Tech students and the technology has been submitted for patent. He has completed his Ph.D from Tezpur University in collaboration with Montpellier University-2, France. During his entire research tenure he has published 14 international journal publications with an average impact factor 3. Moreover he conducted a one week Short-term training program on Renewables in Science and Engineering. He has also participated and presented his research in many workshops, seminars, STTPs etc. in India and abroad. He is also the recipients of many awards/fellowships like ITS-SERB, Indo-French Sandwich Fellowship, CSIR-SRF, MNRE-NREF-SRF, Best Poster Award of ISCA etc. |

Our department is currently engaged in cutting-edge research funded by AICTE. Following are the list of ongoing/completed sponsored research project:
Along with these the M. Sc. Students pursue their final semester project under the supervision of the departmental faculties. If needed, they can work in collaboration with different research institutes and universities also. For such a case, a research fund of up to Rs. 1 lakh can be sanctioned to master degree students for research project under Research Promotion Scheme (RPC).
The department offers two year Master of Science in Applied physics and Ph.D. programme in different fields of physics. Apart from these the department is offering engineering physics course to B. Tech 1st year students of the institute.
The faculty members of the department are engaged in research in the different areas of physics – both theoretical as well as experimental. The research work is funded partly by the institutional grant and mostly by the different funding agencies like AICTE, NRB etc..
