Solar street lights have been available for quite a time now, having originally been designed for use in less developed or isolated areas or perhaps places where the electricity supply has been disrupted by man-made or natural disasters. The technology guiding the use of solar energy has progressed significantly to enable projects to be feasible throughout the world. The situation now is that solar street lights powered by solar power plants can be simply and rapidly installed, giving the potential of many years of trustworthy use, with a minimum of maintenance required.
In these times of heightened environmental awareness, electric street lighting is rapidly required as an enormous consumer of electricity at a vast financial and environmental cost. However, because of road safety and security benefits which result from a good street lighting system authorities everywhere are keen to implement cost effective and environment friendly lights. Solar street lights can deliver that much desired outcome and offer an exceptional lighting program whilst at the same time producing considerable environmental and economic savings.
The Solar Light's installation was part of Phase - II of the Solar Power setup in NIT Silchar which was sub-divided in two phases. Phase - I consisted of installation of 50 LED based solar street lights of which there were 32 units of 15 W, 10 units of 21 W and 8 units of 28 W LED Solar Street Lights. Phase - II involved setting up of further 25 units of LED based solar street lights of which there were 16 units of 15 W, 5 units of 21 W and 4 units of 28 W LED based Solar Street Lights. This project was carried out by "Microsun Solar Tech. Pvt. Limited".
